Through the support of the Division of International Programs and the Division of Engineering Education and Centers at the National Science Foundation we have established a collaboration between the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology (SDSM&T) and the Mongolian University of Science and Technology (MUS&T). In conjunction with the SDSM&T REU Site within the Department of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering at SDSM&T we have met with faculty within the School of Chemical Technology and Material Sciences at MUS&T to identify research projects. This collaboration will provide undergraduate students from the United States the opportunity to perform research and experience a new culture with the purpose of broadening their technical and societal perspective.

MUS&T is the major technological university in Mongolia and is located in the capital of Mongolia, Ulaanbaatar. The Department of Chemical Technology, which was created in 1993, became the School of Chemical Technology and Material Sciences in 2000. The School of Chemical Technology and Material Sciences provides courses in the general, analytical, organic, inorganic, physical and colloidal chemistry for students in geology, mining industry, food, and light industry technology. Recently the Analytical Center was established at MUS&T which goal is to provide MUS&T with a central facility housing modern analytical equipment such as an electron microscope, atomic absorption spectrometer, Fourier transform infrared spectrometer, chomatographs, and x-ray diffractometer. Current research activities within the School include:
  1. Study of pollution rate of natural water in soil;
  2. Softening and freshening of water in Gobi and desert regions;
  3. Building materials technology;
  4. Fur and leather processing technology;
  5. Determination of rare-earth elements in Mongolian ore deposits; and
  6. Silicates and ceramics chemistry.

In the summer of 2002 we sponsored our first REU participant to MUS&T. This year we look to support two REU participants to perform research at MUS&T. The research projects sponsored by MUS&T faculty can be found at the Project Description link.
